Acura TL Brake pad replacement?

After my last oil change, the technician mentioned in the report that front brake pad is 3/32 and needs to be replaced. What does 3/32 indicate, should the pads be replaced immediately. What is the critical point (1/32 or 2/32) before it has to be absolutely be replaced?
