Is university all about looks and appearance?

Everyone seems to be more cautious and self-critical about their looks when they start university and I wonder where it comes from. Is it because seduction, sex and games are more easily accessible now? Do we need to feel good about ourselves by getting more appreciation and attention? What is it that makes us so shallow?
